North Georgia Road Cruising July, 21st 2007
Another trip to "pigmy land" in North Georgia. I will let the pictures do the talking! The herping vehicle ready to light up the road:-)
The first find of the night was this nice little Eastern Garter Snake Thamnophis s. sirtalis. I don't find these very often in this area as it is fairly hilly and dry terrain.
Shortly after the Sun made it's last appearance of the evening I found this small adult Copperhead Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen crossing the road.
I spent the next hour or two riding around staring at pavement........and staring at more pavement. The snakes were not very active and my eyes were starting to getting tired. A friend of mine, Bart, was also in the same general area as I was and I decided to drive over and meet him for a minute before I made the drive back home. A few hundred yards before arriving at the gas station we were meeting at I found this freshly hit Carolina Pigmy Rattlesnake Sistrurus m. miliarius. I always hate seeing them run over.
Bart had better luck and while driving to the gas station he encountered this nice living female Carolina Pigmy Rattlesnake Sistrurus m. miliarius.
