South Georgia Herp Trip April, 2002

Nothing like South Georgia in the springtime. Snakes are crawling around looking for mates and everything is so full of life at that time of year. Below is a collection of pictures from one of many trips to the region. If memory serves me correct I was accompanied by my friend Gordon on this trip. *There are some pics of DOR's (dead on road) in this post*

The first snake we encountered was this fairly dark colored Southern Copperhead from SW Georgia.

As is always the case, mortality on our nations roads is a big killer of all wildlife. Snakes are no exception to this and I typically see many more snakes run over on the road than I ever see alive. Sometimes I take pictures of the pretty, rare, or just odd snakes that are DOR.

Corn Snake, King Snake, Gray Rat Snake all DOR within 50 feet of each other on the same road. A beautiful DOR Eastern Kingsnake that was gravid.

Shortly after lunchtime we turned onto a rural dirt road and were greeted with this beautiful serpent on his way to somewhere:-) This is a Melanistic Eastern Hognose Snake doing it's best to look like a cobra. After that failed it promptly played dead. Such neat snakes!

And as luck would have it a beautiful adult female "Strawberry" Southern Hognose Snake.
